あれからHuluの月会費払って繰り返しアメリカTVドラマの「グリム」見てます。
そこでよく登場するセリフが以下の二つ。
- "For God’s sakes"
- "You don't understand"
For God's sakes は苛立った時にも使う？
For God's sakes は、英和辞典では「お願いだから」とか、「一生のお願いだから」みたいな訳になってますが、いや、もう一つの意味あるんじゃないの？って思うわけです。そこで、英会話イーオンのレッスン中に、For God's sakes ってどういうときに使う？って聞いてみました。
そしたら、自分が苛立っているときにも使うみたいです。相手がモタモタしてるとか、話が通じない、もしくはわかってもらえないときに、「もう、何なんだよー」っていうときに使うことがよくあるそうです。
苛立ってるとき、「もういい加減にせぇや」っていうときにFor God's sakes を使うシーンは、ビックバンセオリーのシーズン3エピソード14「アインシュタインと転職の法則」とかでも出てきますね。
Scene: A children’s play area.
Leonard: Hi. I’m Dr. Hofstadter. Where is he?
Security Guard: Ball pit.
Leonard: Thanks for not calling the cops.
Security Guard: Oh, hey, it’s no big deal. My sister’s got a kid who’s special.
Leonard: Yeah, well, he’s extra special. Hey, Shelly. What you doing?
Sheldon: Size ratio was all wrong. Couldn’t visualize it. Needed bigger carbon atoms.
Leonard: Sure, sure. How did you get into this place?
Sheldon: Back door has a five-pin tumbler system, single-circuit alarm. Child’s play. You can start sorting protons and neutrons while I build carbon atoms.
Leonard: No, I don’t think so. We need to go home now.
Sheldon: But I’m still working.
Leonard: If you don’t come out of there, I’m going to have to drag you out.
Sheldon: You can try, but you’ll never catch me. (He disappears under the balls)
Leonard: For God’s sakes. Sheldon, come here!
Sheldon (popping his head up): Bazinga. (Disappears, pops up in another place) Bazinga. (And again) Bazinga. (And again) Bazinga. (And again) Bazinga.
レナードがシェルドンを家に連れて帰ろうとしたとき、なかなか言うことを聞いてくれない、話が通じないと、イライラしますよね。そんなときに "For God's sakes." って言います。
You don't understand は文字通りの意味じゃない？
一方、「グリム」のセリフによく出てくるフレーズが "You don't understand" っていうのん。これは「あなたはわかってない」という意味で使われていないシーンが多々あるのです。あれ？？？って。
必死にググって "You don't understand" ってどういうときに使うかと調べても、文字通りの訳しか返ってこなかったんですよね。
たとえば、シーズン6 エピソード6の「ベッドで朝食を」のワンシーン、毎夜怪物に襲われて眠れなくなり、結果的に人を殺してしまった下着姿の Don Wells 容疑者が、安いホテルで自分の滞在部屋のドアをハンマーで固定しているところを、NickとHankが逮捕するシーン。
[Distant hammering]
Guest: Hey, are you the police?
Oh, thank God, someone finally called you.
That man never sleeps!Nick: Ma'am, you need to get in your apartment and lock the door.
Guest: Ooh, what's happening?
Hank: Now, ma'am.[Hammering continues]
Nick: Dan Wells, Portland P.D.!
We're gonna need you to open the door.Hank: Dan, if you don't open the door, we're gonna break it down.
Dan: If--if I let you in, it'll get me.
Nick: Dan, it's just me and my partner.
Dan: No-no-no-no-no, I can't open this door.
I-i-i don't know how it gets in, but it does.[Hammering resumes]
Hank: Last chance, Dan. Open the door.
Dan: You--you--you don't understand, it'll kill me!
このときの "You don't understand" は、とにかく相手の要求に対して否定、または拒絶するニュアンスで答えています。相手が自分のことわかってくれないとき、理解してもらうための説明が難しい、あるいは不可解な事態のときに「いやだ」っていう感じ？
この "You don't understand" はよく使われるみたいです。
文字通りじゃないフレーズとして、他には "Tell me about it." ですよね。これは、実質 "You don't have to tell me about it" を短くしたもので、「言わなくてもわかる」、つまり「ほんまこれ」「せやな」っていう同意を表すセリフですね。
